Portland Roasting

Portland Roasting entered the industry at a time when the market was awash in local coffee companies. My job was to create humorous, yet sophisticated brand and ad messages that spoke to the company's target customers. Projects came to include print ads, Web copy, brochures, sales sheets and P.O.S., which included paper cup blurbs, table tents, shelf tags, banners, trade show signage and more. In addition, I developed the company's three-year-marketing plan, provided creative direction and art direction, and was instrumental in creating their brand.

I was also tasked to create a tagline that would speak to both consumers and cafe owners. I found that both groups in their target market are passionate - even fanatical - about good coffee. In fact, coffee consumption is often highly ritualized, half-jokingly compared to a quasi-transcendental experience in search of which many people drive far out of their way. Armed with this knowledge, I came up with about 20 taglines. The winner: Your search is over.

Konami Games

E-marketing firm eROI needed several pages of creative, funky and highly targeted copy for a new website they were developing for interactive gaming company Konami's "Music in Every Direction" website. And when they called me, they needed it within 48 hours. No problem. I'm happy to report that the copy quality exceeded all expectations, was produced well in advance of the deadline and required almost no revision.

Thanks for some awesome work."

Three Star Fix Advertising

As co-founder of this brand-oriented ad agency, my first job was to develop the business name and tagline. Seafarers know that a three star fix describes the three stars that navigators sight on to get their bearings on the high seas. That image resonated with the firm's role as brand strategists who help business leaders get their bearings in the marketing world. From that, I saw them as The Brand Navigators, and voila! the tagline was created. It turned it to be a good name. Within a year Three Star Fix Advertising made Media Inc.'s top 100 list of advertising agencies in the Northwest.

Writing projects included business name, tagline, Web copy, self-promotional booklet, "The Fine Art of Commerce" (Co-author). In addition to writing and concept development, I co-creative directed the web design, in cooperation with my then-business partner, Steve Rawlinson.

Portland General Electric

In order to promote fitness and environmental responsibility, Portland General Electric sponsored an internal program called the Bike Commuter Challenge. Employees who choose to ride their bicycyles to work were given incentives, such as safe bike storage. Brown bag seminars were designed to help them consider the feasibility of such a choice. Joel was called upon to create a flyer and a brochure promoting this program.

Portland Advertising Federation Advance

I currently serve on the Board of Directors for the Portland Advertising Federation and chair its Publications Committee. When I stepped into the position of Publications Editor, its e-newsletter, Advance, suffered from an erratic publication schedule, inconsistent editorial content, and general neglect. By creating submission guidelines, establishing a publication schedule, raising the bar for editorial quality and developing an offbeat, slightly irreverent editorial "voice", readership increased dramatically, and the Advance has taken its rightful place as the official mouthpiece of the Portland Advertising Federation.

Responsibilities include: Editor, writer, communications management. E-copies available upon request.

Mountain Outdoor

Mountain Outdoor is a Web-based retailer that specializes in snowshoes and snowshoeing accessories. The company came to Joel's firm seeking to redevelop its brand, relaunch its website and add other Internet-based marketing strategies. They managed the redesign of the logo and retooled the website, adding various interactive features and finally put together a suite of Internet marketing tools aimed at gathering new leads and managing relationships with existing customers. Joel's part of all this included developing the creative brief, writing the new tagline "Go offline" and writing newsletter and Web copy.

Poor Richard's Restaurant

At Poor Richard's restaurant, not much has changed since they opened their doors in 1960. Even the original owner, Hal Hulbert, now in his 90s, shows up for work every day. Joel created these direct mail pieces to promote the eatery's famous "two-fer" dinner, while using artwork from the client's archives to draw attention to its colorful history.

OP!DEV Business Consultants

Jerry Hemmerling, Op!Dev's president, is a uniquely gifted man in the realm of business management. His resume ranges from retooling Nike's accounting system to streamlining OHSU's Renal Tissue Tracking System to mapping a portion of the humane genome. Now he runs a business consulting firm. Jerry needed a business identity and website that reflected this range of experience, yet kept his sales messages simple and logical. Writing projects include Web copy.
